Nigerian-British hollywood star, John Boyega, and Idris Elba have been announced as members of the Oscars committee, as Hollywood tries to repair the damage from this year’s “Oscars So White” controversy .
The Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences unveiled its largest-ever intake of new members on Wednesday.
Almost half of the 683 people invited to join are women, bringing the representation of women in the organisation from 25 per cent to 27 per cent. Emma Watson and comedian Tina Fey are among the new members, who come from 59 countries.
Forty-one per cent of the invitees are people of colour, bringing minorities’ share of total academy membership from 8 per cent to 11 per cent.
This year’s class of actors, directors and other film industry professionals is more than double the number invited in 2015, when the academy brought 322 members into its ranks.
