Buzzfeed has unearthed a series of interviews in which the Republican front runner, Billionaire Donald Trump said the late Princess of Wales, Diana, was crazy and he could have slept with her, according to a report in The Daily Telegraph.
Trump made the assertion in a 1997 interview with Howard Stern, an American radio and television personality renowned for asking personal, sometimes crude, questions.
“Why do people think it’s egotistical of you to say you could’ve gotten with Lady Di?” Stern asked Mr Trump. “You could’ve gotten her, right? You could’ve nailed her.”
Mr Trump replied: “I think I could have.”
The interview took place just weeks after Princess Diana and her boyfriend, Dodi Fayed, were killed when their car crashed in a Paris tunnel in September 1997 as it was being pursued by paparazzi photographers on motorbikes.
The presidential contender made a similar declaration in a separate broadcast with the same interviewer recorded in 2000, but also said she was “crazy, but these are minor details.”
“Would you have slept with her?” Stern asked in the latter interview.
“Without even hesitation,” replied Mr Trump, who has also built a reputation as a reality TV personality.
When a female contributor to the programme interjected “he wishes he’d had the opportunity.” Mr Trump, who had phoned the programme to discuss his personal list of the world’s top 10 most beautiful women, admitted: “There’s a truth to that.”
He added: “She was really beautiful and people don’t realise how beautiful she was. She was super-model beautiful, she had the height, she had the beauty, she had the skin, she had the whole thing.”
In the earlier interview, Mr Trump claimed to have received a “really nice” letter from Princess Diana thanking him for a favour he had done her. He declined to say what the favour was.
He also described his familiarity with the tunnel where the princess met her death, saying: “I know that tunnel in Paris. It’s got like a 30-mile limit.
“If you look at this tunnel — and I really know that tunnel well, I’ve been through that tunnel many times — you can’t go more than like 30, 40 miles an hour. If you’re going 40 miles an hour through that tunnel you’re going fast. These people had to be going at 120-something miles an hour.”
Of Dodi Fayed, he added: “He was not good for her, it turned out.”
