Speaker of the House of Representatives, Aminu Tambuwal, has denied that his convoy hit and killed two people in Kaduna on Monday, saying that the incident could have been caused by a preceding convoy.
According to a Nigerian Tribune report, the denial was issued by the Speaker’s aide on media, Alhaji Imam Imam, who said over the phone that: “maybe the entourage that went before the speaker’s was responsible.”
Meanwhile, an eyewitness said two persons were killed and scores injured around 10.45a.m. on Ali Akilu road in Kaduna “in a multiple accident involving the convoy of the Speaker.”
The eyewitness said the “convoy was coming out of Deluxe Suites and hit the road trying to stop approaching vehicles in an effort to make way for the Speaker.
“In order to avoid collision with the Speaker’s convoy, a commercial bus with the number XA 863 FGE stopped abruptly which made other vehicles to ram into themselves. A Toyota Hiace with registration number XA 657 PAK in the process crashed onto a wall fence, killing two passengers, a lady and a man in the front while the driver and other passengers inside the vehicle sustained injury.
“The Speaker and his entourage did not bother to stop but proceeded towards Kaduna South on their way to Abuja. People were not happy about the development. They used their cars and other objects to block the road which caused traffic gridlock. This went on for about two hours as other road users tried to seek alternative routes to continue their journey.
“The joint team of military and police personnel was later deployed in the site under the command of Colonel Adebayo Fawole, who directed that the crowd be dispersed. A towing van was later brought to remove the damaged vehicles from the scene. The dead and injured were moved to Barau Dikko Specialist Hospital.”
Meanwhile, the National Union of Road Transport Workers (NURTW), through its chairman in Kaduna State, Comrade Alhassan Haruna 313, said that immediately he got the news of the incident, he sent the chairmen of Kawo Motor Park and the Central Market to rush to the scene, and they reported to him that two persons were killed.
