A woman in North London, Grace Gedler has got married to herself in an unprecedented arrangement that saw her proposing to herself at a registry and then accepting the ring before signing up to marriage.
According to Nigerianwatch.com, Ms Gedler proposed to herself at a ceremony attended by 50 guests on Parliament Hill, north London and walked down the aisle alone. She said that she was inspired by Bjork’s song Isobel with the lyrics My name’s Isobel, Married to Myself.
The ceremony was attended by friends and her sister and the wedding was completed with a kiss on a mirror.
According to the ‘bride’, she decided to perform the ceremony with herself after being single for six years and building up a good relationship.
Despite not having much choice about staying with herself for the rest of her life, Ms Gedler said she had pre-wedding jitters but went through with it anyway and now feels empowered and like she is no longer single.
She said: ‘A few did comment, in a light-hearted way, that it was a bit narcissistic. Obviously, if you have just announced you’re marrying yourself, it is plainly a statement of self-love and I was under no illusion how self-indulgent that might appear. “But I was completely comfortable with my motivations. I’d been on a journey of personal development using meditation, dance and performance to increase my self-awareness.”
Ms Gedler added that the process she went through included a Shakti Tantra programme focused on sexuality and how this was bound up with making agreements with yourself and other people.
Ms Gedler did not comment on what legal status her marriage would have or whether it would be tenable in a court of law.
