The 2013/2014 season of the second-tier of the English football league, called ‘the Championship’, got underway Saturday.
Although not very popular outside Europe, the division is very important in the English football calendar as a significant number of teams or footballers in the league have been involved with top flight football before at some time or the other. Also, according to Delloite, in the 2004–05 season it was the wealthiest non-top flight football division in the world, and the sixth richest division in Europe.
Perhaps the most significant reason to pay attention to the league is because every season three teams from the Premier league would be relegated to play in the Championship the following season while three teams from the lower division would be promoted to the Premiership at the same time.
