A 24-year-old man, simply known as Godsgift, who is suspected to be mentally unstable, has allegedly butchered his own mother to death in the historic riverside town of Oloibiri in Bayelsa State and buried her remains in a shallow grave.
Oloibiri was the place where Nigeria’s first commercial oil well was discovered by Shell Darcy on Sunday, January 15 1956.
The deceased, a 67-year-old mother of four, was identified as Mrs Rose Jonny.
It was reported that Godsgift killed his mother with a machete in her sleep before dragging her butchered body through the window to bury her in a shallow grave dug behind her house.
Neighbours believe the man was mentally unstable although there is no medically verifiable reason for their suspicions.
He allegedly told his mother earlier that she would not see the next day.
A source told the Vanguard, “At about 9.30pm, he was reported to have crept into the mother’s room and butchered her in her sleep. He took her bloodied body out of the room through the window and dragged her to the back of the house where he dug a shallow grave, dumped her body and covered it with sand.”
Neighbours became suspicious the following day because of what they thought to be an unusual silence form the deceased’s house.
They even became more suspicious when they discovered that her door was locked from the inside and there was no response after knocking on the door several times.
They called on another son of the deceased before forcing the door open, and discovered the entire room splashed with blood.
The neighbours and other children of the deceased were said to have traced the blood stains to a shallow grave at the back of the house where the body of the woman was found.
The state Police Public Relations Officer, Mr. Alex Akhigbe, confirmed the incident when contacted, he said the suspect has been arrested and the case transferred from the Ogbia Police Station for investigation at the Criminal Investigation Department (CID).
