Arsenal conceded a late penalty to Olympique Marseille last night in a European Champions League match that very well looked wrapped up for Arsenal after 90 minutes of play.
The penalty was conceded during added time after 90 minutes of play and was converted into a goal by Andre Ayew, thankfully for Arsenal fans, they were already two goals up.
The London team travelled to France to play their first match in a group that had been dubbed ‘the group of death’ in this year’s European Champions League. Other teams in the group are Borussia Dortmund and Napoli.
Both teams were evenly matched at the end of the first period. Ball possession was Marseille 51% Arsenal 49% after 35mins of play.
Despite flashes of brilliance from star strikers of both teams, Walcott of Arsenal and Ghanaian international, Ayew of Marseille, the first half ended goalless.
Two minutes into the second half was when Marseille’s first big chance of the night came after a corner was played towards Valbuena who volleyed the ball, narrowly missing the goal. It was so narrow he thought he had scored.
Arsenal’s first goal came from Theo Walcott in the 64th minute when he volleyed the ball past Mandanda into the corner of the net.
Marseille, playing in front of a home crowd that was constantly edging them on, pressed relentlessly for an equaliser, which never came.
Arsenal second goal came through Ramsey in the 83rd minute of the match by holding up three Marseille defenders to stroke the ball under Mandanda.
Had Marseille more time to play they probably would have equalised but they did not and the match ended 2-1 in favour of Arsenal.
