Militants believed to be Boko Haram members have reportedly launched another attack on a Police station at Misebiri, Damaturu, Yobe State, on Thursday evening according to Nigerianeye.com.
It is believed that the insurgents gained access to the police station through bush paths surrounding the city managing to avoid the military base at the entrance of the city from Borno and three military checkpoints located along the Damaturu-Maiduguri Highway.
A source reported that sporadic gunshots, which started at 6:35pm were still being heard as late as 9:35pm on Thursday.
Boko Haram members had reportedly made several attempts to penetrate the Yobe State capital, Damaturu, but were frustrated by the Special Forces.
The onslaught took security operatives by surprise as the police station had never witnessed such an attack before.
It was learnt that security operatives were under pressure as they scampered to defend the various formations within the city.
A source said that heavy artillery fire was heard in the fighting between the insurgents and the Special Forces.
When the spokesman of the Joint Task Force in Yobe, Lt. Lazarus Eli, was contacted, however, he said that he did not have details of the attack.
He said that he was waiting to get the details from those who went for the operation before responding to inquiries from journalists.
He later said that the incident occurred by NNPC Mega Station by Red Bricks and not inside Damaturu town.
“I don’t have details, our troops are not back yet, I am waiting to get details before I can speak on this issue to anybody.
“This incident occurred at the outskirt, Boko Haram members have not entered Damaturu now, I think it happened by the mega station, by Red Bricks.
“Unless I have information from the troops who went there, I cannot comment on it,” he said.
The Nigerianeye.com reported that many lives were lost in the attack with causalities from both sides.
On the other hand, The Leadership stated in a report on the same incident that a resident, Musa Ali, confirmed that no life was lost in the attack.
