The capability of Nigerian Authorities to contain Boko Haram insurgents was again put to test on Monday when the religious sect attacked the Composite Group Airforce Base in Maiduguri killing dozens in the process.
According to eye-witness reports, the siege started at about 3am when the insurgents started firing gunshots and rocket propelled grenade launchers in the Maiduguri and Jere metropolis.
The fire fight continued till 8am Monday morning.
Their targets included the Maiduguri International Airport where several innocent civilians are said to have been killed by explosives planted by the insurgents.
The newly constructed trailer park along the Damaturu – Maiduguri road; military checkpoints; residential and public buildings were also attacked according to the Vanguard newspapers.
An eye witness who resides in Gomari airport area, just few metres away to the Air force Base said, ” I saw 5 military operational vehicles conveying dead bodies to the hospital at about 6am, the dead bodies were suspected to be security agents killed during the attack”.
It was also gathered that, over a hundred terrorists were killed by military airstrikes in the counter offensive.
