Chelsea is currently sitting on top of Group E in the current European Champions league season by beating FC Schalke 04 three nil.
Chelsea’s start to this year’s champions league completion was disappointing, to say the least. Losing 2-1 to Swiss team, Basel.
Many had thought their toughest opponents would be Schalke 04. Chelsea’s chances were pinned on beating the ‘weaker’ teams, Steaua and Basel but that theory has been jeopardised by a home loss to Basel. So Mourinho boys went to Germany hoping to accomplish the difficult task of beating Schalke 04 on their home pitch.
Chelsea played with a team completely different from the one that defeated Cardiff 4-1 last weekend. With Gary Cahill, Cesar Azpilicueta, Oscar, Andre Schurrle and Fernando Torres replacing David Luiz, Ryan Bertrand, Willian, Juan Mata and Samuel Eto’o.
Torres got the first strike towards goal of the match but his shot is deflected for a Chelsea corner.
His efforts were rewarded in the fifth minute when he scored Chelsea’s first goal with an assist from Ivanovic.
The only significant thing Schalke 04 achieved with all the ball possession they had for the rest of the first half was preventing Chelsea from scoring a second goal and that half ended 1-0 in Chelsea’s favour.
Schalke continued the match in the second half where they left off in the first half, pushing forward and trying to secure an equaliser.
Unfortunately for them the first goal in the second half was, again, from Toress’ feet. He doubled Chelsea’s lead with a brilliant goal in the 68th minute completing what Hazard and Oscar started deep in the opponent’s half.
The second goal either increased Chelsea’s confidence or demoralised Schalke as the visitors took control of ball possession from the hosts.
Chelsea’s renewed confidence earned them a third goal in the 87th minute of the match when Eden hazard found the net for Chelsea.
As the game wound down to a close, Luiz almost made it 4-0 to Chelsea when he struck from a distance but misjudged the accuracy of his strike and sent the ball wide off the post.
Chelsea dominated the second half and deserved the 3-0 result at the end of the game.
Both teams clash again at Stamford Bridge November 6, 2013.
