The Nigeria Police have confirmed that the son of a former Senator has been arrested and remanded in custody for his involvement in a robbery which took place in Abuja.
Police sources told Vanguard that the former senator’s son, whose name was not disclosed, hails from Ekiti State. He was said to have led a gang of armed robbers to rob a Colonel (name withheld) at Mbora Estate by Jabi District, where his AK-47 and other valuable items were recovered.
According to sources, the robbery operation was said to have occurred on the 5th July 2013 and this led to the arrest of the ex-senator’s son.
His arrest followed a tip-off received from members of the Special Anti Robbery Squad, SARS, during the process of their investigation. After his arrest a search was conducted in his house around Life Camp Abuja where 16 live cartridges and other incriminating material were recovered.
While he was being interrogated it was also revealed that the suspect was a member of a notorious armed robbery gang that had been unleashing terror on the federal capital and neighbouring areas.
The suspect reportedly told investigators that his friend, an Igbo boy whom he knew to be a member of a robbery gang brought the gun and the cartridges to his house and that the boy has gone back to the East with the intention of bringing more arms and ammunitions.
He denied participating in the robbery attack on the Lt. Colonel’s house at Mbora Estate on the 5th of July.
He confirmed however, that the said Ibo boy brought two laptops robbed at gun point to him, which he sold in the GSM Village, Abuja.
He also alleged that the said Ibo boy robbed a man at Life Camp and shot him sometimes in May this year.
The suspect and another member of his gang were last week charged for false information at Area Magistrate court, Karu by the magistrate who ordered that they be remanded at Keffi and Nasarawa State Prisons.
