Yesterday, 23 October 2013, was the 50th birthday of one of the best strikers to have ever won a Super Eagles jersey, the late Rashidi Yekini and he was remembered by none other than FIFA president, Joseph Sepp Blatter, who acknowledged the late striker in a tweet.
The FIFA president wrote: “Rasheed Yekini would have been 50 today. His name as scorer of Nigeria’s 1st World Cup finals goal, lives on”.
Rashidi Yekini scored Nigeria’s first ever World Cup finals goal and he is remembered both for the significance of the goal and the celebration that followed.
Rashidi Yekini died May last year, 2012, at the age of 48 in what was described as ‘near penury’.
