Two goals from Luis Suarez helped Liverpool secure a 3-1 victory in their match against Sunderland placing them second in the English Premiership table behind Arsenal.
Luis Suarez was playing in his first premiership game after serving a ten-match-ban imposed on him by the English FA for biting Chelsea’s Branislav Ivanovich.
Victor Moses was also on duty for Liverpool.
Sunderland were being managed by a caretaker coach, Kevin Ball, after Paolo Di Canio was given the sack earlier last week.
Liverpool were quick in trying to show Sunderland who’s boss but their ninth minute goal by Martin Skrtel from a Steven Gerrard assist was disallowed.
The visitors got their consolation in the 28th minute when a Steven Gerrard corner kick was converted into a goal by Daniel Sturridge.
Suarez made it two in the 36th minute after Sturridge picked up the ball on the right before taking it past Cuellar and passing it to Suarez who simply slotted the ball into an empty net.
The players went into recess with Liverpool two goals up.
Sunderland’s goal came seven minutes into the second half from the legs of Giaccherini.
Luis Suarez finished off Sunderland’s chance of getting an equaliser and sealed victory for Liverpool a minute to the end of the match with another assist from Sturridge.
Final score: Sunderland 1 – 3 Liverpool.
