An unidentified 25-yr-old woman in Veracruz, Mexico contacted the police when she couldn’t use the toilet because her boyfriend had padlocked her jeans to prevent her from cheating.
The 40-yr old boyfriend was subsequently arrested and admitted that he had indeed padlocked his girlfriend’s jeans.
He produced the keys to the padlock, unlocked it and the woman was able to go to the toilet after that.
When questioned, the lady said the abuse from her boyfriend had been going on for years but she was too afraid of him to cut off the jeans and release herself.
She declined to press charges against the boyfriend who was subsequently released by the police after charging him for a minor misdemeanour.
He was also made to sign a written statement that he would not use the padlock against the girlfriend or abuse her again.
Ms. Gonzalez, a Women’s Rights advocate in Mexico has condemned the decision by the police not to punish the boyfriend, saying both the community and the authorities have failed the woman.
She said further that because the woman did not want to press charges did not mean there was not a problem.
She also noted that the 25-year-old woman was just one of the thousands of Mexican women suffering in silence.
