Both Premier league teams based in the city of Manchester were defeated in the premier league games they played on Saturday.
Manchester United and Manchester City have been the top two premier league teams in the last three seasons with City narrowly clinching the title from United on the last day of the 2011/2012 season and United winning it back last year.
Since then, however, both teams have changed managers the more significant one being departure of Sir Alex Ferguson from United after 26 years of being in charge and winning 13 Premier league titles.
Manchester City lost to Aston Villa by 3-2 at the Villa Park, Aston Villa’s home ground. Man City opened scoring with Ivorien Yaya Toure scoring the first goal in the 45th minute. Shortly after resumption of play for the second half Karim El Ahmadi of Aston Villa equalised in the 51st minute.
Edin Dzeko put City in front again four minutes after Aston Villa’s equaliser and City players decided to take an early nap.
Leandro Bacuna equalised for Aston Villa in the 73rd minute and Andreas Weiman scored the winning goal for them in the 75th making the match end 3-2 in favour of Aston Villa.
City are now 5th on the Premier league table just outside the European Championship zone but it’s still early days after all.
While City could blame their defeat on being away whatever could United blame theirs on?
They were beaten 2-1 by a West Brom side featuring Nigeria’s Victor Anichebe at Old Trafford. United’s only goal of the match was scored by Wayne Rooney in the 57th minute three minutes after Morgan Amalfino had put West Brom ahead with his 54th minute opener.
Saldo Berahino sealed the deal for West Brom with his 67th minute goal.
The loss, being United’s second in a row takes the defending champions to the bottom half of the Premiership table in 12th position.
