Nigerian international and Chelsea midfielder scored his first ever premiership goal in his 259th game for the club in Chelsea’s 2-0 win against Fulham on Saturday.
Chelsea desperately needed a win to soothe the pain of two successive losses in one week after losing 1-0 to Everton in last week’s premiership match and 2-1 to Basel of Switzerland in their opening game of the 2013/14 European Champions league season.
Jose Mourinho had to make four changes to the side that lost to Basel on Wednesday by fielding John Terry, Ramires, John Obi Mikel and Andre Schurrle among the starting eleven.
The stats were in favour of Chelsea before the match started. Out of 71 matches played between both teams Chelsea had won 41 times, they’ve played 23 draws and Fulham have emerged victorious only seven times.
The first real chance of the evening came for Darren Bent of Fulham when Cech stopped a superb ball he aimed at the goal post. Bent had scored in each of his last three appearances against Chelsea before Saturday’s match.
Chelsea dominated proceedings throughout the first half but did little with their possession and Fulham were able to hold them to a draw throughout the first 45mins of the match.
The second half resumed with no changes to the starting eleven of both teams.
Chelsea’s first goal was scored by Oscar in the 52nd minute of the match when he slotted a pass from Eto’o into an empty net.
Mikel had an opportunity in the 56th minute but he played the ball wide.
His redemption finally came in the 83rd minute when a corner kick taken by Lampard was knocked in his direction by Terry. He wasted no time in sweeping the ball home for his first ever Premiership goal and Chelsea’s second goal of the night.
Mikel is the ninth African to score a Premier league goal for Chelsea after Drogba, Kalou, Essien, Babayaro, Geremi, Weah, Ba and Moses.
With the win Chelsea go to the top of the Premiership table Liverpool having lost their match against Southampton by a lone goal earlier in the day.
