Nigerians on popular online forum, Nairaland, have been reacting to a statement credited to Nigeria’s Vice President, Namadi Sambo, that the nation’s power plant would be generating 20,000 megawatts (MW) of electricity by 2016.
According to The Premium Times, the Vice-President, Namadi Sambo, gave this reassurance when members of the Alumni Association of the National Institute for Policy and Strategic Studies (NIPSS), Kuru, near Jos visited him at the State House.
Mr. Sambo, who highlighted the progress made by the federal government in the power sector, said the country would by 2016 be able to generate adequate electricity.
He said such power generation would assist in the speedy industrialisation of the country.
“When work is completed on all the power plants, electricity supply will be adequate to drive industrialisation in the country.
“These plants include those at the Mambilla, Gurara and the 250 MW plant in Kaduna, as well as the 10 thermal power plants about to be commissioned by President Goodluck Jonathan,’’ the vice-president said.
No sooner had the assurance been published than Nigerians started voicing their opinions on the assurance.
Most commentators on Nairaland expressed not only doubt and scepticism at the assurance but outright disgust and contempt at what they described as
“empty promises” being made by the federal government.
“always given us fake promises since 1999” Said a commentator who identified himself as Ajas Baba
Another commentator, who calls himself deeptesting said: “I just can’t stop laughing at the idiocity of Mr, President and his team….. What gives him the impetus to believe that he will be re-elected to accomplish his unattainable dream in 2016… I am so angry right now because this clueless and retard leaders are taking Nigerians for granted…”
Yet a third one going by the moniker, cold simply remarked, “Oh,oh here we go again..sigh”
A few commentators who expressed optimism were strongly cautioned against being optimistic by the others.
