President Barack Obama seems to have shifted positions on rap-mega star, Kanye West, from calling him a jackass to saying his music is ‘outstanding’.
The president reportedly referred to outspoken rapper, West, by that un-presidential terminology after the rapper interrupted proceedings at the MTV VMA 2009 while an award was being presented to Taylor Swift. (We’re all familiar with that infamous incident)
Then in 2012, Obama admitted he preferred his Watch the Throne co-star Jay-Z’s lyrical flow over that of College Dropout Yeezy.
As if that was not enough, the president stepped in again, when in the summer he bemoaned a recent “shift in culture” among US youth in a conversation with Kindle.
“Kids weren’t monitoring every day what Kim Kardashian was wearing or where Kanye West was going on vacation and thinking that somehow that was the mark of success,” he said of a rose-tinted, pre-Kimye era.
It appears things have changed though (maybe someone at the White House got a couple of concert tickets as Christmas present) after the leader described West’s music as “outstanding” this week.
The only problem is, he did it in the same breath as saying he’d rather hang out with the cast of Duck Dynasty than with him and Kim Kardashian, in a bizarre, one short of “What’s your favourite sandwich filling?” interview conducted by People magazine recently.
“Kanye’s music is outstanding though,” he said, turning down the faux opportunity to “hang” with America’s other premiere couple. “I’ve got a lot of his stuff on my iPad. If it was a concert, then I might not mind listening to him.” The President replied.
Kanye, who is isn’t exactly famous for keeping his mouth shut, is yet to respond.
